Adobe AIR 1.0 Flash ComboBox Updates

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Mike Chambers got a hold of me today in reference to my post,  Adobe AIR 1.0 hates the ComboBox Component, and said:

We tracked this down to an issue in the components / AIR, and have fixed it in internal AIR builds.

In the meantime, Im trying to find out if there is a workaround for the issue which you can use until we update AIR.

Thanks for all of the help with this, and sorry about the hassle…

I will keep you AIR developers updated on any additional information I get. Thanks for looking into this so quickly Adobe!

Pixelfumes Flash Kuler Panel at FiTC

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

My pal Val got to go to FiTC this year and sent me an IM after she was in Lydia Varmazis’s session.  She sent me a snapshot of my Kuler Panel for Flash being discussed.  I thought that was sweet.  I have never been to FiTC but at least my blog has…  Even if it was my old blog with the huge “I moved” statement at the top.

If you haven’t tried the Kuler Panel for Flash out then go download it!

Adobe AIR 1.0 hates the ComboBox Component

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

So, I have been attempting to port some of my older AIR applications to 1.0 recently. While trying to get one of my apps running today I kept receiving the following error when testing (publishing in debug mode):

*** Security Sandbox Violation ***
SecurityDomain ‘app:/my.swf’ tried to access incompatible context ‘http://adobe.com/apollo’

I started removing things and pulling code and trying to troubleshoot the cause of the error. Finally, I pulled the ComboBox component and the error went away. Just for giggles I created a brand new AIR file using the latest and greatest Flash Update, AIR Extension, Flash Player, etc. thinking I must have some sort of legacy file somewhere. I placed nothing but a ComboBox component on the stage and tested it. I got the same error. What I find interesting is that it references Apollo. I am on a Mac (Leopard) so I had a co-worker test on Windows XP. They got the same error. Now, the app plays back fine for the most part but I worry about what might happen down the road… I have a scree record below showing the steps used to get the error. Anyone else experience this strange phenomenon?

Flashpitt 08 – A Flash Conference in Pittsburgh!

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

This one has been in the works for a long time now.  Members of the PittMFUG have always wondered why it is that we couldn’t have our very own Flash conference.  Pittsburgh has been very happy and excited with the recent OnAIR Bust Tour event and visits from Kevin Hoyt for the AIR/Flex 3 Prerelease.  Two of our very own MFUGers, Val Head and Joe Kromer have formed FlashPitt.  I have been waiting for a while to finally be allowed to blog about this so here goes!  The Press Release is as follows:

Adobe TV and AMP (Adobe Media Player)

Adobe Media Player (AMP)

By now many of you have likely seen or tried the Adobe Media Player (AMP). AMP is a sweet little application written on the AIR runtime. AMP is now out of Beta and is looking pretty solid. It allows you to watch your favorite video streams online as well as providing you a means to look at videos that you may have on your computer. It touts some pretty interesting features such as subscriptions and customized interfaces for content providers.

Adobe TV

What you have likely not heard much about is Abode TV. I was pretty surprised by it myself. If you head on over to tv.adobe.com you will be presented with an interface much like the one you find in AMP. You have access to training videos right from the Pros. You may even see a little satire. If Adobe TV can stay updated and fresh then it could become a great resource. I would like to see them go the way of gotoandlearn.com and kick out some great videos like Lee does.

The Adobe Lunchbox

Adobe Lunchbox

Recently, Adobe sent the PittMFUG (Pittsburgh Adobe Flash Users Group) Managers (Wayne and Myself) a sweet metal lunchbox full of goodies! Its funny how excited two grown men can get over something as simple as a metal lunchbox. Inside was a plethora of goodies… A Wi-Fi Locator Keychain, energy drinks, Pop Rocks, a T-shirt, cord wrapper and a sweet collection of stickers! The stickers are my favorite. You have probably seen a rowing trend of these little square stickers gracing laptops in your local user group or at conferences. The lunchbox also had a CD in it full of Integrated Workflow demos.
This is a definite pickup for us and a great way to help present new content to our UG members. I thought I’d share some pictures with you guys.
Thanks Adobe!

Photoshop Express (Online) Beta Live

Photoshop Express

To some this may be old news but I think it is worth spreading the word.  There was promise long ago that Adobe would be brining a version of Photoshop to the web; now you can actually try it out for yourself.  Photoshop Express provides you with 2GB of space to upload and edit your photos.  You can create albums and share your photos with friends and family.  The whole application seems to be written Flex and is carrying a similar UI scheme to the Adobe Media Player.  The application allows you to apply some really neat filters such as Pop Color, Distort and Sketch. It would be neat to see Photoshop Express as an AIR application as well.
